Located in the central Pacific Ocean southwest of the continental United States, south of Alaska, and north of Tahiti, the State of Hawaii is an archipelagic state of the United States.
The island of Hawaii is known as “the Big Island”. Hawaii is the home to major resort area of Kona, two of the world’s most active volcano and two of the world’s largest mountains. Oahu, known as “the Gathering Place”, is the most developed and populated of all others. Its southern shore is the home to city of Honolulu. There are pineapple fields outside the city and its North Shore, which is also known each winter as the home of some of the largest waves in the world. The other very popular visitor destination is the USS Arizona National Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
Maui, the second largest island, is the home to 10,023 feet tall volcanic mountain crater of Haleakala. Maui is also known as “the Valley Isle” for the narrow plain between Haleakala and the West Maui mountains. On the island’s western side are the resort areas of Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kihei and Wailea. On the eastern side, the tiny village of Hana is reached by one of the most winding and beautiful roads in the world.
Kauai, the “Garden Isle,” is known for its several natural wonders such as the Wailua River, Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast. One of the rainiest spots in the world is “Mount Waialeale.” Molokai is known as the “Friendly Isle”. It is one of the least developed islands in the chain. It is the home to Kalaupapa, the leper colony on the Molokai’s north shore that was the home of Father Damien. Lanai is the home to several exclusive resorts. Niihau is a privately owned island with an entirely Native Hawaiian population.
